Vitality Stadium will be the centre of attention when Bournemouth and Newcastle United go head to head in the Premier League round 2. The Cherries head into Sunday’s clash following a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest and, no doubt, they would be happy with yet another share of spoils. All Tyler Adams, David Brooks, and Enes Unal are out of contention with injuries for the home side.
Anyhow, we believe that new Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is going to be sorely missed in the 2024/2025 Premier League campaign. The Magpies, on the other hand, did well to beat Southampton 1-0 in their opener despite Fabian Schar’s early sending-off. The Switzerland defender is banned for Sunday’s clash, with Emil Krafth likely to step up. As Newcastle are not regarded as good travellers, we are tempted to put our money on draw. Talented midfielder Lewis Miley remains in the recovery room.
How the bookies view it: Magpies have the edge
This looks like a 50/50 game for me but JILIMACAO have Newcastle as 6/5 favourites with AFC Bournemouth as big as 2/1. I wouldn’t be surprised if this match ended level and that pays 5/2.
Recent head to head: Eddie not so steady
Howe’s record has been poor against his old club since taking the reins at Newcastle, going for league games without a win against Bournemouth. But he did manage a 1-0 League Cup win over the Cherries at St James’ Park in 2022. Bournemouth won 2-0 when the Magpies came calling last term.
Players to watch: All eyes on Evanilson
Bournemouth’s £40million signing Evanilson didn’t feature last weekend after only just sealing his move from Porto. He should get a debut in this game though and Betfred price him at 7/4 to make an instant impact with a goal.
Despite being linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, Alexander Isak remains at St James’ Park with the clock ticking down until the transfer window closes. The Swede will be out to open his account for the season and is 23/20 for anytime scorer.
Probable line-ups
Evanilson could be unleashed by Bournemouth and that would likely see last week’s scorer Antoine Semenyo move out wide. Swiss defender Schar is suspended for Newcastle after his red card last weekend.
AFC Bournemouth: Neto, Huijsen, Kerkez, Smith, Zabarnyi, Cook, Ouattara, Christie, Tavernier, Semenyo, Evanilson
Newcastle United: Pope, Kraft, Hall, Livramento, Burn, Joelinton, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Gordon, Isak, Murphy.
Bournemouth vs Newcastle Prediction
Newcastle were tied for fewest conceded goals in the Premier League two seasons ago. Last year, they were in the bottom half of defensive metrics with 62 allowed goals. The main reasons for such a massive swing were injuries and the Champions League duties.
Neither of these issues are present now for Eddie Howe and his troops. Howe has a healthy group of players on disposal at the start of the new season.
Newcastle should definitely be better than last year and we have to see them as the favourites to claim the spoils at Vitality Stadium.
Another big reason for backing the visitors is the departure of Dominic Solanke. Big Dom contributed in 22 of Bournemouth’s last season’s goals, scoring 19 of them.
Solanke has gone to Tottenham, leaving Iraola with a big task to adjust the team to life without their talisman.
On top of the away victory, we will back Alexander Isak to score anytime for the visitors at the 2.37 odds. Do not forget that Bournemouth shipped 8 shots on goal last weekend in the match against Nottingham Forest.
